Podcasts & Vodcasts
As I often get asked what podcasts/vodcasts* I subscribe to, I thought I’d provide my current list. Last updated 10 May 2010.
My daily commute means I have 8-10 hours of listening time each week, so rather than listen to the same music each day or listen to one-eyed opinion radio, I prefer to listen to podcasts on topics that interest me.
Here’s what I’m currently listening to, in the general context of what I talk about on this blog:
- Astronomy Cast: I love astronomy, and this is an excellent resource.
- Baggini’s Philosophy Monthly: Interesting and accessible philosophy podcast.
- Binge Thinking History: Covers topics of historical interest.
- Chess Is Cool: Russian chess Grandmaster Alexandra Kosteniuk.
- Coffee Break French: Excellent weekly learning French podcast.
- For Good Reason: Weekly interview-based skeptical podcast.
- Geologic: The maestro and comedian, George Hrab, speaks!
- In Our Time: Often excellent discussions about just about anything.
- Inside Oxford Science: Feeds the knowledge monster.
- The Jodcast: Jodrell Bank Observatory’s own podcast – with character.
- Little Atoms: Skeptical interview-based podcast.
- Naked Scientists: Feeds the knowledge monster.
- Real Time with Bill Maher: Strange ideas, but always interesting and funny.
- The Skeptic Zone: Australian podcast for science and reason.
- Skepticality: Official podcast of Skeptic Magazine.
- Skeptics’ Guide 5X5: 5 minutes on a skeptical topic.
- Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe: A frankly brilliant skeptical podcast.
- Skeptoid: Covers a skeptical topic each episode.
- Token Skeptic: Kylie Sturgess’s fantastic skeptical podcast.
- World Archaeology News from The Archaeological Box: Weekly podcast containing the week’s top archaeological news around the world.
The list changes periodically as I discover new shows and need to trim some of the fat, or podcasts go out of production.
* If you’ve been living under a rock, a podcast is a periodic MP3 ‘show’ and a vodcast is a periodic video ‘show’ – both usually via an RSS feed, and obained via visiting the show’s website, or using an RSS reader or podcatcher software such as iTunes.
