But I don't think for a moment that my family is particularly unique. All families have their dark secrets, nearly always done in the attempt to "keep up appearances" to neighbours and social peers. Shipping away a pregnant daughter to an aunt in the country or a convent springs to mind. Still, if the small amount of heart-baring in this post can help one person, it's worthwhile. @Rob
